A Story of Pores: Plant Medicine for the Skin
The skin is the story that we are inside of, the cover of the book of which our organs tell the tale. We are unique in our outer layer - rather than feathers, fur or scales we are cloaked in a curtain composed of a million breathing pores. Our dermal blanket is the largest part of our bodies and represents a picture of our inner health, affecting daily the way that we inter-face with our community and environment. It is both a window to the inner workings of our physiology as well as a voice for the body to express who we are and what every layer is going through.
In this dry and blustery mid-winter time, we will dive more than skin deep into the layers of the dermis and explore our own skin stories. Leaves and bark are the skin of plants and trees; we will learn how to use their skin to heal that of our own bodies. As a class, we will meet, observe, and taste the herbs that have a strong affinity for the skin. Plants that we ingest as tea, infusion, and tincture to influence the skin as well as those that we use topically as salves and poultices will be considered. We will learn the ways in which herbs like burdock, red clover and yarrow affect skin conditions from breakouts to blisters, and how we can better learn to love and nurture the story within our skin.
